Nikon Control Beta 3
Nikon Control Beta 3 is available for download. The new version needs Mac OS X 10.5.0 or later and works with Nikon D3x, D3, D700, D300, D200, D90, D80, D60, D40x and D40. This is a major update with a lot of new features.
New Features
Automatic HDRI Creation The application can calulcate a high dynamic range image after bracketing including auto alignment and save the result as OpenEXR, LogLuv TIFF, Float TIFF, JPEG-HDR or Radiance.
Editable Settings All major settings are now editable from the application. If the setting is not editable due to the program mode the current value is displayed but can’t be changed.
Aperture and iPhoto Auto Import You can automatically import all images (except the high dynamic range images) into Aperture or iPhoto without any third-party software. You can decide whether the application should be launched if it is not already running. Otherwise the images will be saved in the save folder. You can define the name of the project (Aperture) or album (iPhoto) where the images should be imported to. If the project or album does not exist yet, the application can create it if you want.
GPS Map When the image contains GPS data, the location will be shown in a map, if there is an internet connection.
Self Timer You can set a timer delay and the number of shots you would like to take. The application then will show a visual progress in combination with a acoustic signal.
Focus Mode Status The new status bar now includes the focus mode status.
Enhanced Viewer The viewer loads the images much faster and requires less performance. You can zoom in and out, show it in its actual size and move the image in the view.
Configurable Background Color You can set your own background color for the viewer.
Improvements
Much Nicer Design The application now has a much nicer design.
Histogram View in Inspector The histogram view now resides in the inspector window.
Faster Histogram Calculation The histogram is now calculated from a thumbnail image which results in a much better performance.
Same Index for Bracketing All images of a bracketing series will get the same index, so it is easier to find all images later.
General Image Details General image details like file name, type, dimensions and size are shown in the bottom bar.
Smaller Main Window The main window now can be resized smaller than in previous version.
From this version on I am using an image viewer that was introduced in Mac OS X 10.5. The reason for that was the better performance and memory management. Unfortunately the implementation of the image viewer is still buggy and does not always work as intended. So the zooming does not keep the image centered and I was not able to keep the gradient in the background. Hopefully the image viewer implementation will get better in Snow Leopard.
You should not trust the image viewer when is shows high dynamic range images. The implementation of the viewer does not do any tone mapping, so the result might look weird. If you open the result in Photoshop, Photomatix Pro or some other HDR viewer the result should look similar to what you get when you let those apps calculate the HDR image.
There will be a small update (Beta 3a) early next week. The reason for that update is the change of the application name. I don’t know yet if the auto update will work then. So it might be necessary to download the application then by hand. I will let you know.
Please keep posting feedback and feature requests. If you would like to get a personal reply please don’t post a comment but send me an email.
Nikon Control is now called Sofortbild. Please visit the new website http://www.sofortbildapp.com/ to download the app.
WOW!
That’s a great release! thank you for your work! is it possible to implement timing overriding to reach for example 50″, 1′… 3′?
Great work Stefan!
Hello Nikon control does not work with chambers(cameras) Nikon D2x not with D2h either, I believe that if there realizes an alternative application to nikocontrol serious interesting Nx that could be in use in ancient chambers(cameras), a greeting and forward.
Hola Nikon control no funciona con camaras Nikon D2x ni tampoco con D2h, creo que si realiza una aplicacion alternativa a nikocontrol Nx seria interesante que se pueda utilizar en camaras antiguas, un saludo y adelante.

Great job! I am installing it now…

I don’t think I’m understanding what this application is for. Is it for people who shoot tethered? Why would I use this instead of Aperture? I appreciate your work and am just trying to understand the app better. Thanks for your help.
I love your work so far.
My business primarily now is real estate photography. In doing that I have set my camera (D300) up to preform an exposure bracket usually ranging from -3 to +3 with full stops in between and taking advantage of the “interval timer shooting” function. This way I can have the images taken without my hands being on the camera to release the shutter.
But with each new image to be taken I have to navigate through the “interval timer shooting” function; which is about 10 clicks of the multi selector button to take a new series of shots with the exact same setup as the previous shot series. I’d think there could be a way to hit one or two buttons to repeat the same shot series setting. Like applying the Last Filter or command F in Photoshop.
Additionally could this be available to work on an ITouch or IPhone? Hauling around a laptop while shooting interiors and exteriors just isn’t a practical way to go. That would be huge if you could pull that off!!
Cheers,
William

Great work!! In testing with a Nikon D200 I noted the following:
1. – the inspector allows you to re size vertically but not horizontally (wider), some of the info presented in the inspector window can’t be read/seen as it is cut off by the narrow width of the window.
2. – when shooting a bracketed HDR image set the application opens a “Unable to Capture….” warning window for each image in the bracket set. The application does take all the images even though the waring/error is displayed.
again, GREAT WORK and thanks for sharing with the public.
Tried NC for the first time today, you’ve done excellent work Stefan. I’ll pass along the first 2 things that I noticed (ie, things I’d like to see improved)…1) It desperately needs keyboard controls for changing shutter/aperture; the up/down/left/right arrows would seem logical (could also be changed w/ Apple remote??) 2) The fact that NC overrides my camera’s internal file naming/numbering is a major bummer; it would be much preferable if it were to use the camera’s file names instead of generating it’s own, if this is even possible. Thanks for your hard work!
Could you do a Windows version, as many Nikon users have PCs. Thanks to consider that.
Hiya, this is such a good tool. I was using Nikon’s version (trial) but had a few problems.
This is so great. Thanks for your work!
Muliti camera support?
Looking forward to seeing more from you
Nice layout got it to run with D300 and trying HDR but it takes the shots then tells me it can’t and shuts down? but it is in a beta but look forward to update, brilliant work.
Fantastic product!
I am a Lightroom user and have been looking for an application to do this for ages.
It worked first time with the D3 and Lightroom and the new interface is brilliant.
Keep up the good work!

Great App! Please make it compatible with the D2H!!!
Just wondering why the D70 and D50 aren’t supported? Did Nikon change something when they produced the D80 and D40.
I’m curious about the lack of D70 support – is that a limitation of the SDK?
Yes, I’m curios too about D70.
Anyway, Stefan, your app works very well with my D300 using a MacBook Pro on OSX 10.5.6!
The only issue I experienced once I switched to TIFF from the gui I was unable to record the shot in this format…D300 takes the shot but the file is not visible into the viewer and it’s not saved to its location either. No problems with all the other formats!
Anyway, AWESOME job! Many thanks!

Stefan thank you so much for your excellent efforts, and for making this available. Having Aperture integration as well is fantastic. Keep up the good work!
hi
i also wonder why D70 is not supported
Kommt gerade zur rechten Zeit – fantastisch! Vielen Dank!
Very interesting indeed. I just do not understand, why the D2 series is completely neglected.

werkt helemaal fantastisch met mijn Nikon D700, top dus!!
Control Beta works great – would be cool when you can add Video Capture of the LiveView. There is no Video Capture App for Mac at the time – only Pc stuff like nkvid. Keep it up !
Very nice., Stefan. ok, now for your next assignment: remote control app for iPhone?
Stefan:
Any chance you will make this for PC users????
Stefan, do you believe this will work with the new Nikon D3s as I am about to trade in my D3 for the new D3s
Regards
John (UK)
This is a great resource for Nikon and Mac users I look forward to using it. Thank you . regards, Gerry
Looks real cool. Please let me know when the D3s is supported.
Thanks.
very nice interface
I am having some difficulties with the Live View function when tethered to a D3, and I am waiting on a reply from Stefan. But otherwise it is a great application.
Thanks
Is there any chance of a remote control function + view pic that is taken + real-time viewfinder view app for the ipod touch / iphone?
It would be awesome to have something like this to allow those of us who do outdoor photo… a laptop is heavy, an ipod/iphone is light.
My D300 has a USB port… why not have the ipod/iphone connect to the camera directly (or use a wireless USB adapter (not wifi) on both for wireless remote control) and control it?
What say ye? :)
